The room on the roof – An Example of vertical living by i29 Architects

A small masterpiece of vertical living from the Dutch studio i29 Architects. The renovation of a room – inside a tower on De Bijenkorf, Amsterdam – that saw the usual architectural plans subverted in order to make the most of the space. The task was accomplished to the perfection.

The concept of vertical living is something very singular, if analyzed. Since the dawn of planning, when you had to arrange stones or wood to build a temporary shelter, the idea of living vertically is not passed often through the head of “builders”.

After all, the gravity affects the way you build things and, since Adam and Eve, it has shaped the world as it is – the easiest thing has always been to build and deploy the functions on horizontal axes.

The vertical connections in fact are conventionally understood as the simple steps necessary for the sole reason that we are not able to fly yet – and if we were, I would not exclude that the world would be totally different from how we know it today – as if we find how to control gravity or invent an incredible material that allows hundreds of meters of light … in these cases, the architecture would assume new aspects that are unimaginable nowadays.

Being visionary or, perhaps, more simply brilliant architects, the team of i29 Architects put into practice this concept by bringing out the quality and spectacularity. In this room, thinking about the possibility of a vertical living, they have multiplied the available spaces.

It is a subversion of the rules. True, had already happened that someone planned this.Andrea Branzi for example created a similar installation with Vertical Home – and in general other architects had conceived and exploited the space vertically. But here we face a small jewel in the interpretation of this idea. And i29 Architects has once again confirmed their talent in design, and the esteem I have for them.
